The “Aeroshow de Cozumel” took place on Sunday 5th, during the first weekend of February 2012.

Patty Wagstaff, the first woman to win the title of US National Aerobatic champion, at the airshow Cozumel
In the south of Cozumel, about 15km from the main square, the event started at 10 a.m. being introduced by a show of formation flying from the military pilots; as a quartet they demonstrated their flying skills. The show continued with 5 famous show pilots, one of them Patty Wagstaff, the first woman to win the title of US National Aerobatic champion and one of the few people to win it three times.
Loopings, the “Knife-Edge Pass” (flying sideways in a straight line), spins, circles – everything has been performed either high above or close to the track/ visitors. More than a thousand people came to watch the event, tourists and Cozumelanians. Furthermore, the military, marine and police exhibited their gear such as special diving equipment, different kinds of guns, or showed how they act in an emergency situation (I edited the photo and changed it into a black and white picture since it conveys the impression that it is a scene during the war years ago.) Also, they performed some acrobatic tricks next to the aerobatic maneuvers.
Taking photos has been a challenge not only because of the huge crowd that I had to get through but also because of the direct sunlight and the smoke caused by the airplanes. A backlight-situation on almost every picture taken from the planes up in the air has been inevitable. When the planes flew close over the track I had to take the picture with a very fast shutter speed (at least 1/1600s) and protect the camera from the smoke immediately after that. Sometimes people or trees eventually framed some of the pictures I took and improved them regarding composition rules. All in all it has been a great event and nice practice in terms of sports photography.
