Cozumel Above The Sea – the photo book of Cozumel

by Othon Gonzales

Two weeks ago I was invited to the presentation of an incredible beautiful book: “Cozumel Above The Sea”, by
photographers Tatiana Reichgruber, Tania Nacif and Paul Von der Heyden.

cozumel above the seaIt’s a professional work, and it’s going to be in exhibition until the 28th of February, at the museum of the island,
but here I want to share what is behind the pictures. cozumel above the sea

tania Nacif, Tati Biermas, Paul Von der Heyden I supposed that, in order to capture good images of the creatures, they had to be very patient, but as they told me,
there’s more beyond that. They were three years going camping in the wild, sometimes all night long inside uncomfortable tents, bitten two thousand times by all kind of insects, bedbugs, ticks, mosquitoes, bloodsuckers, worms etc… (there’s no effective repellent against them). They literally ate them.

So, first of all, I applaud the effort of Tati, Tania and Paul, thank them  for this unique book that allowed me to know
a whole lot more about the flora and fauna of Cozumel.

Second, to every person who is reading this blog,  a recommendation… Buy the book, it´s worth it!

And…Happy Carnival!

Tati´s photo tip:
To see other photographers work is inspiring!
Whenever you have a chance…look closely at images.
If you like a picture – analyze why you like it.
This will improve your photography skills and is FUN!!

Sports in Cozumel

by Othon Gonzales

Cozumel is famous as a beautiful place for Scuba diving and nowadays more and more for triathlon competitions (swimming, biking and running).

Ironman in Cozumel

You can see Ironmen and women doing their routine training everyday during the year in order to get in shape, yet most of them are foreigners.

Local people mostly prefer to do other sports: soccer is very popular, but baseball also has a lot of amateur teams in Cozumel.

Soccer in Cozumel

They play every weekend in the ” Rojo Gomez ” Stadium,  located on the corner of 30 Ave. and Salas street.

Baseball in Cozumel

There are also many persons, all ages going to the “Sports Field” (Unidad Deportiva) on 11th Ave. to do jogging, basketball and field and track sports.

But the most popular sport in this island is and it will always be… Jar and Mug lifting!!

Tati s photo tip:
Go out and photograph sport activities. It s a lot of fun – especially here in Cozumel.
For sharp images use a fast shutter speed (min. 1/500) or the sport setting of your point-and-shoot camera.Fast lenses (f. 1.4 – f.2.8) help to keep working with a fast shutter speed, too.
Also using the flash minimizes motion blur.
Framing the photograph “wider” – providing more space around your object, helps keeping the action in your shot.

It s better to do a little cropping in post production.

Independance day in Cozumel

by Othon Gonzales

It’s in September when we celebrate the independence of Mexico from Spain.

Well, this year, the City Hall decided to set right in the roundabout of the crossing of 11th and 30th avenues, a model of the column of the Independence.

Cozumel Avenida 11 with 30 The original is a beautiful monument located in Mexico City, 36 meters height, built in 1910. Some heroes of that war are buried there, Miguel Hidalgo and Andres Quintana Roo, among others.

Columna Independencia Mexico CityThe column has four female statues ( the originals in bronze ), which represent law, justice, war and peace.
Angel de Independencia
On top of the column there is a winged angel holding a crown of laurels, symbolizing the victory.
Angel of the IndependenceIf you drive or walk over there, stop by and take a look. it’s worth it to see… and…

¡Viva Mexico!

Tati ‘s photo tip:

Margaritaville in Cozumel

by Othon Gonzales

For sure you know the restaurant-bar Margaritaville here in Cozumel, but maybe some of you don’t know where the name is come from…
In 1977 the singer Jimmy Buffett

margaritaville cozumel spent a month on vacation in Austin, Texas.
He loved to go to a place ” Lung’s Cocina del Sur” where he discovered the cocktail “Margarita”.

He composed a song and named Margaritaville, with lyrics reflecting a laid-back style in a tropical climate and he
included the song in his album : “Changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes”, which reached #1 on the Easy Listening chart, and #13 on the Hot Country chart that year.
It was a success so huge, that Buffett, who also is  a business man, opened his first bar with that name.

The Margaritaville bar in Cozumel , relects precisely that kind of lifestyle.
If you have not heard the song yet, click here:

And using the last verse of it… I could only tell you: ” It was my damn fault!

Tati´s Photo tip:
To photograph cocktails like Margarita´s use clean glasses and pay special attention to the decoration (fruits, umbrella, and straw), the light and background. I like to put the camera on the same level than the glass to avoid weird distortions.
The “Food” program of your point-n-shoot camera can come in handy! Try it

Do you know Michelada?

by Othon Gonzales

In Mexico and Cozumel you don´t need a pretext to keep partying…even if there’s nothing to celebrate…so…
Well, it’s summer and it’s hot… and we have the best drink to cool off…” Michelada “…. for all those that don’t know what’s that…

  Here is the recipe:
– Rim a glass with lemon and salt.
– add cubed ice.
– add lemon juice, a dash of Worcestershire sauce, a dash of Maggi seasoning juice, and a dash of habanero sauce.
– add a little ground black pepper.
– finally, add clear beer and mix it.

Michelada Ingrediences

Tati´s Photo tip:
How to photograph beer?
1. Warm Beer Is Your Friend
Cold beer will not give you a whole lot of bubbles and in addition will cause your glass to fog up with condensation.
2. Tall Glasses = Lots of Bubbles
3. Remove every single piece of dust and lint or you end up photoshopping A LOT!
4. Pinch of Salt
If you drop a few pinches of salt into beer it will bubble like crazy.
Fine grain table salt workes the best.
5. Plan Ahead, Have Extra Beer

Understanding Colors – for photographers

By Tati Biermas:

Understanding the Meaning of Colors (Color Psychology) is important for your pictures.
And altough the meaning of colors varies depending on culture and circumstances each color has many aspects to it.

Color is a form of non verbal communication a dynamic energy. Use colors wisely in your photography.

Helpful tips:

Learn the “language of colors” using the color wheel: Contrasting/competing colors, harmonic colors, warm and cool colors, etc…
