Cozumel Above The Sea – the photo book of Cozumel

by Othon Gonzales
http://www.cozumelspanish.com

Two weeks ago I was invited to the presentation of an incredible beautiful book: “Cozumel Above The Sea”, by
photographers Tatiana Reichgruber, Tania Nacif and Paul Von der Heyden.

cozumel above the seaIt’s a professional work, and it’s going to be in exhibition until the 28th of February, at the museum of the island,
but here I want to share what is behind the pictures. cozumel above the sea

tania Nacif, Tati Biermas, Paul Von der Heyden I supposed that, in order to capture good images of the creatures, they had to be very patient, but as they told me,
there’s more beyond that. They were three years going camping in the wild, sometimes all night long inside uncomfortable tents, bitten two thousand times by all kind of insects, bedbugs, ticks, mosquitoes, bloodsuckers, worms etc… (there’s no effective repellent against them). They literally ate them.

So, first of all, I applaud the effort of Tati, Tania and Paul, thank them  for this unique book that allowed me to know
a whole lot more about the flora and fauna of Cozumel.

Second, to every person who is reading this blog,  a recommendation… Buy the book, it´s worth it!

And…Happy Carnival!

Tati´s photo tip:
To see other photographers work is inspiring!
Whenever you have a chance…look closely at images.
If you like a picture – analyze why you like it.
This will improve your photography skills and is FUN!!

Independance day in Cozumel

by Othon Gonzales
http://www.cozumelspanish.com

It’s in September when we celebrate the independence of Mexico from Spain.

Well, this year, the City Hall decided to set right in the roundabout of the crossing of 11th and 30th avenues, a model of the column of the Independence.

Cozumel Avenida 11 with 30 The original is a beautiful monument located in Mexico City, 36 meters height, built in 1910. Some heroes of that war are buried there, Miguel Hidalgo and Andres Quintana Roo, among others.

Columna Independencia Mexico CityThe column has four female statues ( the originals in bronze ), which represent law, justice, war and peace.
Angel de Independencia
On top of the column there is a winged angel holding a crown of laurels, symbolizing the victory.
Angel of the IndependenceIf you drive or walk over there, stop by and take a look. it’s worth it to see… and…

¡Viva Mexico!

Tati ‘s photo tip:
Cozumel has a miniature park displaying the most important buildings of the country Mexico.
Also an exhibition with interesting Mexican art.
I offer photography tours exploring the park and you will learn everything about perspectives in photography.
Along with architecture photography and how to take pictures in a museum.

by Othon Gonzales

Every four years, the Worldwide Football Soccer Championship takes place, and the Mexican team prepares the best they can
to do a good playing and be lucky.
FIFA WC 2014
No doubt, the phrase ” While is life, is hope “, is true, because every four years, the Mexican fans think and pray there is a
possibility to win. This youear they played like never before and still lost like always.

The awful truth is they have never gotten even in semifinals, since at this level of the games, they are defeated by
the best teams in the world…Germans, Argentinians, Brazilians, etc…

Anyway, you will see around everybody wearing green t-shirts ( the color of the Mexican uniform ), doing great party while
the team keeps alive.

If you like soccer, come out and join them… you’ll get a lot of fun !

FIESTA DE CEDRAL

by Othon Gonzales
http://www.cozumelspanish.com

May is the  month with more holidays and celebrations in all the country; The 3rd is the day of the Holy cross all over Mexico, but here in Cozumel is very special because it was here at ” El Cedral ” where the first mass took place in 1519.

Later, in 1848, during the ” war of castas “, a Mayan group from Yucatan arrived the island and founded a plantation. They decided to organize a big party to thank for the food they received, every year, from the  2nd to the 5th of May.

Cedral 2014 girls

For this, they invented along the years a very special dance called  ” pool  kekén ” ( head of the pig ) which is still celebrated nowadays. A man carrying on his  head a tray with a head of a pig dances all the place with women grabbing colourful strips around him, dressed up in traditional costumes.

Around the year 2000 they included a county fair, with horse races, bull fights and a show of a rock star singer or a band to close the event.

If you like the crowds and interact with local people, go there next year !

Tati´s Photo tip:

For photographing the colorful traditional events in Cozumel consider using the “vivid” or “faithful” picture optimization for nicely saturated color.
Also working with a faster shutter-speed helps avoiding motion blur.

Animal´s faces! Our jury was thrilled by all entries – but liked the ones above the most. For their composition (“Rule of Thirds”), softness, color composition & narrow depth of field.

Robyn Lynch McLain 2

Another great shot from Robyn Lynch McLain. A unusual expression for a baby…but so cute.

Cordula Schmiedel & Bread Pit send in this one. Yes, also sculptures can make for interesting face photos. We liked that there was nothing distracting in the sculptures background.

Curvy plant

Tania Nacif
Fascinating curves of nature. It’s a nicely balanced picture (rule of thirds) with the main focus on the curvy plant. The color contrast of the bright green and the brownish-red stem make for a very interesting picture. Simple and vivid.

2

Cozumel Photo Tour

Anita Legare
By far the most entertaining entry and a creative implementation of the given theme. Gotta love the expression of the curvy model.
