Independance day in Cozumel

It’s in September when we celebrate the independence of Mexico from Spain.

Well, this year, the City Hall decided to set right in the roundabout of the crossing of 11th and 30th avenues, a model of the column of the Independence.

Cozumel Avenida 11 with 30 The original is a beautiful monument located in Mexico City, 36 meters height, built in 1910. Some heroes of that war are buried there, Miguel Hidalgo and Andres Quintana Roo, among others.

On top of the column there is a winged angel holding a crown of laurels, symbolizing the victory.

The turtle season is full on…the crew of biologists marked 4784 nests so far!!!
About 800 – 900 nests have emerged naturally and there are many more to come.

Although the tropical storm Ernesto destroyed many nests there are still many more than last year!
Did you know that only 8 species of sea turtles exist in the world, 2 of them nest in Cozumel, Mexico.
It is the “Green Turtle” (Chelonia mydas) and the “Loggerhead turtle” (Caretta caretta).

For all of you that want to see the baby turtles hatch, please get registered at the department of Ecology, between 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.
It is located in Cozumel on Av. 65 and 11 street.
They have organized a bus that will take you to the location on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Donations are highly welcome…to keep this important project going!
